Set in July 1962, the story follows Edward Mayhew, a young history student, and Florence Ponting, a violinist, on their wedding night at a small hotel overlooking Chesil Beach on the Dorset coast. As the newlyweds sit down to dinner, they are filled with private anxieties about intimacy and marriage. Their inability to talk openly about their fears, especially regarding physical intimacy, leads to an emotional and irrevocable rift that shapes the rest of their lives.
